Actress Drew Barrymore was named by Forbes Magazine as Hollywood's least cost-effective entertainer, with actors Eddie Murphy and Denzel Washington also on the latest annual list.
Rom-com queen or box office flop?It looks like producers aren't getting bang for their buck when it comes to Drew Barrymore, who was named Hollywood's most overpaid actor by Forbes Magazine. The actress, who has starred in one movie miss after another, brings in only $0.40 for every dollar she gets paid, the magazine calculated.Chalk that "win" up to a string of film disasters, including 2010's "Going the Distance," which only raked in $42 million world wide, and the 2007 box office failure, "Lucky You," which brought in $8 million.
Barrymore returns only 40 cents for every dollar the studios spend on her, as her films over the last five years have flopped at the box office, the magazine reported. Her 2009 film "Everybody's Fine," a 21 million U.S. dollar comedy-drama, earned only 16 million dollars in box office receipts. Her 2007 drama "Lucky You," which was made at a cost of 55 million dollars, only earned eight million dollars.
Murphy, whose recent films have returned an average 2.70 dollars for every dollar he got paid in salary, was ranked second place. Two of the former "Saturday Night Live" comedian's most recent films, "Imagine That" and "Meet Dave" have both failed to make ends meet, taking in 22 million and 50 million dollars respectively.
Murphy's latest film "Tower Heist," a crime comedy that debuts Friday, has earned decent reviews from critics and moviegoers. Exhibitor Relations expects the film will top the box office this weekend with 26 million dollars in sales, according to Forbes.
Rounding out the top five most overpaid entertainers are: Will Ferrell, who topped the list of overpaid celebrities for the past two years, returning 3.5 dollars for every dollar he was paid; actress Reese Witherspoon, returning just 3.55 dollars; and Washington, returning 4.25 dollars.
